Benefits of Abstinence

Abstinence. What a mellow word. It’s one of those quiet, low profile words. At the same time, a very confident one, knowing its own strength. It is not a part of pop culture any more than overalls or bell bottoms. However, there is something about it. Not showy or weak, but clear and resolved, brimming with conviction. Although the below observations carry there own weight in reason., abstinence is mainly associated with the religious or spiritual concerning sexuality. A person knows what it means. But just to be sure, I’ve dedicated some thought to it to seek out the point.

Webster’s dictionary, well endowed, states abstinence as “An abstaining from some or all food, drink, or other pleasures.” Or, “The act of giving up drinking any alcoholic liquors.” For this article, it is the “Other pleasures” part that is relevant. For the pleasure I speak of is very much ear candy and a very “in” word: Sex. It is powerful. Seemingly a juggernaut. But I offer some very worthy observations concerning the imposing force.

One of the most obvious advantages of abstinence is there is no chance of pregnancy. For those not looking to get pregnant or have any more children, abstinence is extremely effective. Countless women are left trembling as they wait for their period to arrive after sex. Some prematurely take pregnancy tests merely weeks after sex to ease the mind. But one can avoid the stresses pregnancy tests can bring along with the telling of the results simply by abstaining from sex. Birth control can be expensive and protection at times does not live up to its scientific resume. There is just no guarantee. With abstinence, it is a lock.

No STD’s. It is not one of a person’s worries through abstinence. One can spend time doing whatever else. Through abstinence, it will always be another person’s problem, an embarrassing and serious one. According to the Sacramento Bee, Sacramento County reported 7,678 new chlamydeous infections last year, which is almost twice as many as the state of Utah. Also, think about the little things that become very irritating: Getting to the clinic and waiting there, sneaking a peak at all the unenthused people in there, and scheduling one’s life around these occasions. And the fear, the fear of the unknown is considerable. The paranoia, the sweaty, cold palms. All this business for the sake of a pleasure.

I dare a person to pursue abstinence at least for a while for no other reasons than to dedicate attention to things not sexual, greet a personal challenge, and to build character. Find out something about oneself. See what one becomes with that claimed need not met. Even among couples, if a relationship is corrosive, flimsy, and boring without sex, perhaps a good deal of evaluation should be underway. Having said that, abstinence is a very useful and long range tool. When applied with focus it can be surprisingly beneficial in several ways. But understand, this is a dare.
